City Administrator Job Posting

The City of Pelican is located in the gorgeous northwestern part of Chichagof Island, readily accessible by the Alaska Marine Highway System and daily flights by Alaska Seaplanes. If you enjoy living and working in a setting that is renowned for its fishing, boating, waterfalls and relaxing in the nearby White Sulphur Hot Springs while enjoying stunning mountain views this position may be for you. We have amenities that include a cafe, local market, library, internet, and yes even Amazon delivery. The City has an excellent school system with small classrooms for hands-on learning.

The City of Pelican has an annual budget of approximately $2,000,000. The City population consists of 90 year-round residents with an increase of several hundred visitors in the summer months. The economy is driven by boating, fishing, lodges, charters, and fish processing.

The City manages its own harbor, boardwalk, water, sewer, public works, electric and fuel sales to the public.
The City has 7 full-time employees and 10 seasonal employees.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

  • Ability to listen to all sides of an issue and negotiate resolutions.

  • Ability to build a professional network with officials and business owners.

  • Budgeting experience.

  • Knowledge of community development programs and processes.

  • Ability to use computers in accomplishing daily tasks.

Essential job functions:

  • Attend City Council meetings and all other committee meetings as requested.

  • Assist commissions and boards with strategic planning and economic development projects.

  • Proactive approach to development and strategic planning.

  • Assists the Mayor and Council in daily municipal operations working with administrative staff and department heads.

  • Assists in the execution of policies and programs to meet the City’s goals and objectives by conducting project research and forming action plans and strategies.

  • Responds to inquiries, questions, and complaints regarding city services and works with citizens and staff to identify and facilitate appropriate resolutions.

  • Provides administrative, analytical, and professional assistance to the Mayor and Council.

  • Supervises, directs and evaluates staff: directing work, assisting in problem solving, counseling, disciplining and completing employee performance appraisals.

  • Coordinates, assigns and reviews work and establishes work schedules for assigned departments.

  • Other duties as assigned.

A Bachelor’s degree and experience in municipal government is preferred. A combination of education and experience in the private sector will also be considered.

The salary range is $70,000 - $80,000 and negotiable depending on qualifications and experience.

Furnished housing is included. This position provides Medical, Dental, and Vision insurance. Upon initial eligibility, the employee is entitled to 14 vacation days, 14 paid holidays, and 15 sick days. Vacation days increase to 21 days after two years.
